went down to the stilly with my dog Woody, his first salmon fishing trip. spent around an hour fishing. basically i went down to give him time in the water, black lab. fish jumpin everywhere. no bites or nibbles but i turn around and my dog has a big pink salmon in his mouth!! its probably illegal but for the record he ate it and i marked it on the card. anyway been fishin the stilly almost everyday and have caught and released over a 100 pinks but still no silver yet. have heard of the being caught on the stilly but not me.

Haha that's great! My lab/bluetick hound caught a smallmouth bass on the Snake River once. Didn't eat it, so I threw it on the stringer, took it home and fried it up. I gave him a bite to thank him for catching dinner. I sure didn't catch anything that day!

Hi, you may want to watch your dog for these symptoms of salmon poisoning. I have no idea how common it is but it is more common this side of the cascades. There are lots more articles on the web. 90% of dogs with the disease and not treated die.

its not illegal to consume on the spot. you dont even have to mark it on your card :) as long as it is prepared on the spot

I recently spoke with a vet regarding feeding salmon to dogs as my 2 love to eat it (when I am eating it, so it's cooked). She told me that dogs that eat the dead carcass after spawning have the potential to become ill. She told me that the flesh forms bacteria that are harmful if eaten. It is my guess that because your dog ate the fish fresh, it will likely be fine but I would keep an eye on your dog just in case. Great hearing about your dog having fun, and out fishing you. Love that!
