Went on a poker run Sat. looking for some fish. Started on the Toutle at I-5 were it dumps into the Cowlitz. Seen the night fishermen coming back with around a fish per rod. Went down and seen one nice king got right away and it was like a light switch and the bite went off. Fish jumping and rolling all over, in 2 hours didn't see one fish got. Around 150 people up and down the bank. 6 friends did the same place Sat. night till Sun am and got 4 fish said they foul hooked several they let go.
Packed up and went to the Salmon hatchery on the Cowlitz. Thay had opened the gates on the dam and the water below the spilway on the gravel bar was 2' under water.
Packed up one more time and went to the Green. I fished at the mouth were it dumps into the Toutle several people fishing, and not one fish in 3 hours. Stoped at Safeway in the way home and picked a couple t-bones.
I talked to the people working the hatchery on the Green, they said they have only put up 150 fish seance Aug.1 they expect a return of 60,000 this year. They need some water, the river is very low. They also said the hatchery is not going to be closed. The game dept talked about it, but they are not going to, they have 2 more years of funding.
