FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY,did i land my first stee-lee.im sorry for not posting these past several trips but i have been a crybaby getting skunked at steelhead fishing being that im new to targeting them.so i have been at blue creek fishing for about a week and hooked into several as they all get off before shore, trying everything.there was this old wise man there that i fished with everyday i was there and he did better than all the bank fishers put together, and some days even the boats.so of course i sat with him and observed and took in as much info as i could.so i learned to make a fly pattern out of yarn and drift it right over the rocks on the river bed.seems easy but the hard part is setting the hook when you cant even feel them pick it up for the quick second that they do as it is the lightest feeling ever.new rods, new reels, new line, jigs, floats, weights, and all i needed was yarn.so in the pic is a summer run stee-lee,witch i was hoping for a fresh winter run but being my first stee-lee ill settle with it.i just wanted to take home a good dinner

Nice job man! I am headed out now to hopefully catch my first one this year. Its been about 14 yrs since I targeted stealheads. I know what ya mean as far as a wise old man some yarn and observing. My uncle is a fishing guru like that. He sits for ever stands up looks at the water a sec casts and then fish on! I wish I had his skills.

Nice job GP. All that hard work finally paid off. Now Jens and I are jealous you got one first. Damn it, I should of gone with you but it was either saving my marriage and family or risk being single again. LOL. Hopefully I will get a chance to go out before New Year's, and get my first steely before Jens does. Did you have someone net the fish for you? With Jens, don't count on him offering to help net your fish. Let us know how it tasted.

Jens no need to be angry, just learn to be positive and your anger will fade. Come on lets go catch some steely, that's how you stay positive. Feeling better already aren't you?

I also had an "Olde" retired Boeing guy, take me aside as a 11-12 year old kid, and put me under his wing one winter ... He taught me so many things, and I was a sponge as well!!! As for the yarn ... I've been using yard, for over 20 years now. The one thing it does for beginners is it hangs up in the teeth, so you get a bit better strike indication. No bait, No bobber, no spin&glow, no nothing ... Plain old yarn. It sinks better, less drag, also undulates with the current, and is cheap, and you can pre-tie a ton of them and the take up no room in your vest.
