Met up with 'D-wizzle' and his buddy Dan with 'flinginpooh' and his son Dillon arriving later in the evening at Blue Creek. There were quite a few anglers spread along the shore with warm fires going. We found a spot further downriver. We all had plenty enough room to fish. I think we all were using different colors, but finding the right weight was the tricky part. We all had to deal with getting hung up about once every other cast. The freezing guides didn't help any either. I finally put on 1/8 oz bass casting weight and that worked but I found it difficult to get a decent cast.
About half an hour of dealing with snags and getting tangled up with the owner of the Cowlitz River fishing above us, I felt my line being pulled and felt exactly like the 5 other times the owner of the Cowlitz River longlining into our drifts and tangling with our lines, he was seriously about 100 yards above us. "Dude!" I called out "Shorten up your drift!" This time however an angry head shake and the screaming of my reel I knew this was a fish. A glorious Steelhead leaped out of the water exposing a flash of silver. What was only about 15 seconds the fish came off. I looked of at D-wizzle and we both shook our heads in disbelief. And of course 5 minutes later, the owner of the Cowlitz hooks into a fish and lands one. It was about 8-10 lbs.
Flinginpooh had one on by the boat launch when we were leaving, but that was the only action I heard about all evening. I think we all found out, using anything more than 1/2 oz, you will be dealing with snags all night.
Until next time ):
