So me and my buddies decided to try our luck at some steelhead again. Arrived at the boatlaunch at the hatchery around 2:00 am, glow balled a few different holes until around 6 am. Not a single hit, although i did hook what i thought to be a cutt, but turned out to be a tail hooked white fish. After trying globalling for a while decided to nap till daybreak, got back up around 730 and headed out to the same couple holes i hit in the night, which turned out to be packed full of anglers that arrived sometime while i was sleeping. I drifted sand shrimp, corky and yarn with scent, maribou jig below a float, just a piece of yarn, but because the very high water level and fast rate of flow the best method was drifting yarn and corky. No fish, and the story was the same everywhere i went although 1 bank angler nearby landed a smaller steelhead. a few were had by boats, saw a guide boat full of anglers get skunked. walked to the mouth of the actual blue creek which was basically rapids, and about a 15 second drift, to my surprise 1 was landed while i was there. all in all a slow day on the cowlitz for both shore anglers and boat anglers. will be back next weekend.
