FISHINROB, ivebeenfishingsince2 and myself loaded up my car at 2:30a. We arrived at the river a little before 5am. Toni met us down there as well right before daylight but didn't stay very long due to another angler using fishing tactics from plantet Ahole. We all were glowballing but none of us sniffed a fish.
Finally when we were able to see, we all were using bobber and jig. The action was slow for us but guys further down were having success drifting. I think there was 8 fish caught by these guys. We all were mad scientists trying everything in our tacklebox. We tried everything.
FISHINROB got the action going with about 3 hookups in a an hour and 2 fish back to back. He landed 1.
A fish finally took my bobber down around noon and took me up and down the river. The last run of my fish snapped my leader. I got another hookup about an hour later and this fish would have been my career largest Steelhead. I had him to shore 3 times. The fourth time, the chromer took off and is now swimming with my jig in its mouth.
since2 had what we believe was a "possible" fish but we'll never know :)
I went a little bit upriver later on in the day to fish with hardware. My first cast into this deep pool with my spoon my rod is almost ripped out of my hands and a gorgeous winter fish peels my line and immediately heads towards the faster water. I only could hold on and hoped this fish tires in the current. I couldn't gain any of my line back and after a minute or so of getting spooled, I had no choice but to tighten my drag and pray. The unbelievable strength of this fish somehow was able to spit the hook. My estimation of this fish would have been about 150 lbs wink.
We finally decided to pack it up and leave but a large school of fish shows. The action was insane. We seen 5 fish caught in matter of minutes. Since2 and myself with hopes of leaving the river not skunked, sprinted back down to the river. We stayed for another half an hour and decided to call it quits, enough was enough.
The talk of the locals is the run is winding down and has been dropping off steadily. I thoroughly enjoyed fishing with the fellas today and Toni and wetting my line with FISHINROB has been long overdue. I am still frustrated thinking of those fish that came oh so close to being landed, but that's how it goes. Until next time..
