Dropped our drift boat into Grays River about 7am. Four rods in the boat fished all day. Not one bite. Ran shrimp behind a diving plug, drifted eggs and yarn, threw Mepps (size 4) in various colors and even soaked some pink jigs under bobbers. All to no avail. Smelt were running in small numbers. Just wound up with a group skunking. And no one brought any bananas.

But, the worst day fishing is better than the best day working. Weather was decent for a January day, and a good time was had with good friends. After all it's called fishing, not catching...

jens: We saw two other drift boats on that trip, no fish for them either. No bank anglers. But if you ever get to float that river there are several excellent spots at gravel bars to get out and bank fish. This trip was especially dissapointing because the water color was perfect, maybe a bit on the clear side - about 3' vis. but the river structure looks perfect for steelhead and fall chinook. I'll be back...
