What a wonderful adventure on the Sky this morning. I have the opportunity to work a graveyard shift on the river and during my breaks am able to get a little fishing in. I fished yesterday evening and again this morning at daylight and had great success both outings. I was fishing appx 1.5 miles up from the lewis street boat launch on the non-HWY 2 side (South) of the river drifting a Gibbs float with a cheater weight and sandshrimps. Monday evening around 8pm I nailed a nice little native buck around 5 lbs which was carefully released in beautiful spawning colors. The fish came on my third cast after losing a previous fish after only a few headshakes on my second cast, I suspect that on the next cast the same fish came back for more and turned out to be that nate. I called it quits for the night and went back to work and made sure to get my pole out at first light to try again. On my first cast BOBBER DOWN, swing and a miss! Second cast, same spot, BOBBER DOWN, fish on! Landed a beauty of a hatchery steelhead after a good fight... I'd say she was around 7 lbs and still had sea lice on her! Nice, fresh fish. The egg skeins were still surprisingly immature so she had likely entered the system just that night or possibly the evening prior. Mad a few more casts and had one more takedown but missed the hookup and quit by 7am exhausted from work and ready to go home. Overall it was a wonderful day on the river :) Hardly any sleds out as the water was pushing nearly 11,000 CFS the whole time. The river is falling into shape now and I will be back out this evening, report to come.
