Drove south from Avery on Rte 301, then left on Road 1268 and left on the trail to trailhead 50. Nice bathroom and small but adequate parking. Trail 50 is a beautiful shade covered trail that runs southeast along the river. There are several places to get off the trail and get down to the river, but most are steep climbs. I hiked about 6 miles down to where Montana Creek dumps into the river. Lots of holes and runs where the trout hide. Couldn't get the fish to rise for for flies, so I went into the deep pools with a silver castmaster with a flattened hook and worm trailer. Caught a picture perfect redband cutthroat. To my great surprise, I also caught my first bull trout. I'd never seen one before. Both were about 13 inches. There were lots of smaller trout that were aggressively attacking the bait. It was hard to keep them off the hook. Sun was hot and the river was cold. Doesn't get better.
