Camped out behind mahaffey's for my dad's birthday and fished every good looking drift i could get to even slid down into some of the drifts in the canyon and couldnt get one take down on my jig and bobber at any spot, so i decided to switch things up and hit the hardware. i then caught the only decent fish of the trip a 11" rainbow out of a drift just passed the redbarn hole. everything else on this trip was just 2-5" babby salmon caught on spinners. i did get one good take drifting shrip in a deep slot by million dollar rock but failed to set the hook. not a bad trip the kalama is still by far my favorite river in the state for steelhead just the fish that were in there were too spooked to hit anything and were few and far in between. the next morning however as we were packing to leave we did see a 2x2 blacktail with a doe jump in the river and swim across and lots of deer in the wheat fields maybe this will have to be my new late buck stomping ground.
