We launched at North Faber’s Landing today (between Concrete and Rockport) and fished the upper Skagit. Running a prop as far upstream and downstream as possible we fished every little eddy, backwater, tailout and run available. It was some tough fishing! We pulled out the stops and employed every salmon fishing technique known the PNW salmon fisherman with only limited success. Eggs/float, spinners, Dick Night spoons, corkies and yarn, plugs, ,jig twitch’n, side drifting and back trolling did not result in hooking one of the 100,000 coho that were forecasted to return to the Skagit river this fall. Ok, I take that back, I did catch a 12 or 13” coho that slipped out of my hand, over the side of the boat and back into the river while I was trying to get a picture of it. We also caught a beautiful 16“ cutthroat. In spite of the less than corporative fish the company and conversation were good and it was a great day on the river.

100,000...Are they just very late? Or not coming home at all?

I think they got lost at the strait and are too stubborn to ask for directions.

The scenery up there is ridiculously beautiful, I have spent a bit of time up there fishing, and yes.......not catching! Are most of those coho supposed to be heading into the Cascade or are they mostly native?

The nets all over the river at various times could be playing a important role. Also they are going to start netting the bay if they have not already.

They ARE THERE! even if you dont catch them. They arent biting, at all. We have bred a trait into coho that tell them not to bite in the rivers. years and years of fishing on them, and the only ones who survive are the ones whos parents didnt bite a blue fox or dick nite, thus the offspring doesnt either. I fished the skagit many times this year, COHO ARE JUMPING AND ROLLING EVERYWHERE around Hamilton. ONE BITE IN 3 TRIPS??? Must have saw 20 roll in front of us in one hole, nothing. Any i know how to silver fish, i slay them in the bay, and use to slay them in the skagit 10 years ago. They're there, they just WONT BITE! makes you wonder if theres anything we can do...
