What a better way to kick off the new year than to spend the day steelhead fishing. So I convinced my friend Steve to brave the sub-zero temps in Spokane and make the 3 hr trip down to Orofino, all along telling him stories of how good the fishing was the previous week. I felt very confident this trip since the fish were very active last week and I tied up some new marabou jigs and had purchased a few different trout beads to try. The morning started off slow and was bitterly cold, making me question whether it was even a good idea to try this trip on such a frigid day. However, the fishing turned red hot by mid-morning and we had the best steelhead fishing morning I have ever experienced. Best part about it was we had this popular hole all to ourselves, which is unusual for a Saturday morning, but could be due to the cold day or late partying the night before! It was a real treat to drift your float down a hole for as long as you want, since no one was there, but we caught most of our fish right in front of us. We limited by 10:30 am and were on the road home by 11:30. Dark colored marabou jigs and faceted beads without bait and without scent worked best today. Most of the fish were 35-36 inches and we caught 5 hens and 1 buck with no wild fish caught today. Hope the rest of my 2011 goes this good.......can't wait to go again.
