Fished the 112th this morning. Lots of fish kicking and jumping. Fished for half an hour and lost 4 (two of which cut my line). I have a 10lbs main line with 8 lbs leader and I'm a beginner and was probably not playing the fish right.

It seems to always cut right above my knot. Is that normal? Or perhaps something wrong with my setup?

I'm thinking I should get a stronger main line and leader.

The action slowed down quite a bit an hour after sunrise as the tide started comming in. That's odd, since I had heard the action should pick up as the tide starts to come in.

Your line and leader are a little light for my liking. Step up to at least 12/10. Are you using any old line? Get rid of it, if you are. If you are using florocarbon line, it's real easy to nick especially using a jig, so go back to go old mono. Try the Palormar knot if you are using the Improved Clinch knot. If you are breaking off at the swivel, then protect the knot with a small red bead.

Lubricate the knot while your are tying it. Spit or water works. It keeps the friction down when you pull the knot tight and protects the line.

Yep, I think Jerry nailed it. Sounds like you are getting some line abrasion when tying the knot. Spit on the knot before you tighten it.

Once the knot is tied and tight- I always give it the tug test, and give that puppy a few good hard tugs. If she holds, you should be fine. If it snaps on me, I do it again until it does not.
