Read a few reports last night and was on the Duwamish by 8:45 near Marginal & 113th, but because I'm a noob to salmon fishing I didn't really know what kind of lures to use or how fast to retrieve. I figured with a million or so fish racing up the river I would get one or two to hit 'something' The tide was low. As the tide started coming in jumpers started showing up and I figured I'd get a little beginners luck. No joy. Tried a pink lead-head feather jig under a bobber. Nothing. Switched to a good sized Buzz Bomb and fished with it for a couple of hours. Still no fish. I guess I don't know exactly how to work a buzz bomb, was just casting and doing a fairly slow and straighforward retrieve. (I read tonight that the 'proper' way to work a BB is to let is sink a second, then reel in five or six feet of line, and repeat) Met a guy going back to the truck who caught two pinks using a BB just like mine. Move upriver, switched to a pink plastic squid. No luck. By this time the tide is high. still a few jumpers here and there, some pretty big ones. Smoked a cigar, drank a Sierra Nevada, joked it up with my buddy and had a great time anyway. My day will come.

Try varying not only the retrieve but also the speed of the retrieve. Sometimes that's what will set them. Last time I was out there, a guy was working a buzz bomb next to me was using what I thought was a very fast retrieve. Within minutes, he hooks into one, and definitely a legitimate take, as I saw it personally, but lost it. A couple minutes later, he hooks up again and brings it in. I took that as a hint and a half to speed up my retrieve. Although I was using a squid jig I sped up my retrieve and within a couple minutes, I nailed one myself. I agree with you last statement. Your day will come.

This might sound odd, but my little 8 year old was lifting up in a long slower fashion, then letting the 1/4 ounce jig sink, then repeating the long slow upward lift. i'd guess the rod was moving 4 feet? And she was slow enough between 4 foot 'twitches' (LOL) that I'm confident the jig was resting all the way to the bottom at times.
I personally use a fairly quick short jigging action keeping it off bottom. Both worked :-) May just have been the fish were in biting mood so as you and islandbass mention, your day will probably be here soon. Just gotta have timning on your side probably. Good luck and thanx for the report.
