Made it out to the Okanogan River again. This time was a new spot where we'd seen a few people fishing. You'll see this little island off of Legion Park in Okanogan. I'm sure most of it is underwater when the water level is higher. You have to wade through maybe 6-10 inches of water to get to it. Less if you find the right spot.

It was a sunny day, not too cold and I had enough action to keep warm.

Soon as we get to the island I waded out 20 or so feet from the shore and throw out a blue arctic fox spinner into the deeper waters and wham. First cast, unbelievable and I can tell it's a good one from the way the current is pulling it when it's not fighting. Landed this hatchery fish pictured, the scale read 7 pounds 11 ounces by the time we got home.

The second fish I caught that day was a massive wild one. I caught it where the current was a bit swifter and when that thing turned sideways it would just peel drag, the fish was like a giant sail. I wish I could have removed him from the water to get a good picture. I'm no expert but if I took a stab at the weight I'd guess between 10 and 12 pounds, if not more because I always seem to lowball. It's the biggest fish I've caught and made this hatchery fish look small.

I gave this report a 5 because it was a ton of fun and there are more fish there. I was able to wade out far enough to see fishing hanging out around some rocks. A big scar-faced wild one kept protecting some other fish I was going after. Any time I drifted the spinner past the other fish who were probably 5-6 pounds, this big ugly wild one would swing in and scare them away. I'm sure he was a double digit fish as well.

I wish I had time to fish there longer, might have walked away with a limit. Either way it's always fun catching a personal best.

Can't wait to return to the river and maybe even test my fly fishing skills, eek :( Sure I'll lose a lot of flies.

Tight lines.

Hey mwdehaan, the old timers taught me 1 pound to the inch over 20. Western WA fish tend to be a little heavier than ours over here. I'm guessing your keeper at 28 inches. Keep it up! Thanks for the report.
