Coho Salmon

Another slow day on the green. Caught 4 coho. One was marginal starting to blush up but was not dark in the belly not too chrome though. They all went back into the drink.

The biggest of the day was a solid 10lb fish though. She was getting that black belly but she put up a solid fight. At least she gave me a smile for the day.

All in all I am starting to loose hope in bright fish down on the green, still fun to catch though.

I am not saying they are not there. I am saying that the Darkness is prevailing over the light... and I don't think that I will be lucky enough to sport any more bright coho this season. But of course I am still going down again to keep up the good fight.

No thats a dark coho, Makscoot. Still not as bad as some fish that I have seen kept. Good report and get ready for the chums!

Nothing against you at all Makscoot, but this has happened several times in the last few weeks around here and I have bumped into folks on the river that do this also. If your going to try to ID a fish, and certainly correct someones ID on a fish you should have a reason and readily give it. Not just like well it looks like a XXX. I have had people on other reports and rivers say that Coho are summer runs, that Pinks are Jack King and now Coho are Chum. I don't have anything against being corrected but I am a little tired of people not taking the time to explain why, because that is how we are all going to get better at this, you know what I mean? Again hope that does not seem rude, harsh, or out of line, I just think it would be better that way.

Oh and on a totally different note, the fish was netted because she rolled up in my line several times which made a mess around her gills, cutting the line was not going to free it up, so I cleaned it up in deeper water with the net before letting him go. Just thought I would mention since netting fish your releasing is crappy form.

Easy to ID.... Big spots on upper and lower parts of tail and back, black or dark gums means its a king. Kings turn from chrome to bronze/copper to black. Big spots on upper part of tail and back, white gums means its a silver. Silvers turn from chrome to pinkish tint to firetruck red. Small spots on back and tail, and white gums means its a chum. Chum turn from chrome to olive green color with "vertical" bars that are usually maroon/purple/black colored. I can't remember anything else off the top of my head, but its best if you check the fish ID's in the regulations, or with someone next to you on the river before you keep something you are unsure about. It could be a more costly trip than you had previously planned if you keep the wrong fish :(

On Hawg Quest they were sayin that in the salt they look at the black part of the eye to tell the difference. The chum has more black but, the last silver I caught, It had plenty of black so I don't depend on that way to i.d. There will probably be miss identification around january on the skookumchuck also. People will call the silvers steelhead. Netting the fish seems ok to me.

hard to explain on a single picture but the easiest way i have found to tell the difference between a sliver and a chum is the width of the base of the tale, coho are much more broad and chum are much wider, also chum have less spots on the back, if it wasnt for the vertical striping i would say this is definately a coho but since this striping is more indicitive of a chum i will not say i would have had to see it in person. looks like a coho chum to me lol

well, you guys should probably go figure out how to identify too. If you have caught enough fish in your lifetime, you would easily be able to tell that the picture of the fish in the net is a silver. I think this state needs to make it a requirement to take a fishing class.. just like a hunting class. They could teach: fish identification, how to fish in combat situations, the proper licenses to buy, what is considered a snagged fish. Then you wouldn't see all these idiots on the river keeping snagged fish and marking them wrong, or not marking them at all.
