Meeting canceled, had gas in the tank and a few hours to kill so I headed for the wall today. The tide was still coming in when I got there so I started with a float and anchovy. The area is under the anti-snagging rule so you can only use one hook making it difficult to hook a fish when fishing the anchovies under a float. Difficult but not impossible, I went through 18 anchovies and hooked a couple fish using the float and anchovy set up.

Out of anchovies I switched over to a standard drift fishing rig and did well until I had to head home. All my fish went into the tube in good shape. The picture is my big fish of the day, one of my biggest chums and his length and girth were both almost 35”.

length and girth 35 ? that would make it about 50 pounds with a girth of 35. girth looks about 22-24 making it about 22pounds. nice big fish, bet it was fun to fight.

The length was accurate, the girth measurement may not have been the full 35" he was flopping around and I was having a difficult time with the measurement. Either way it was one faaaaaat fish.

Way to go Randy!...Did you ever come south for chum? And why come south when you can catch monsters like that!!

No Toni we didn’t make it, Karen’s dad had some health problems and ended up in the hospital. He’ll be fine and fortunately the original concern was a misdiagnosis. But either way we decided not to go.

I have always liked the south sound and it has treated me well over the years. 30 + years ago I used to fish down there with the old styrofoam bonito floats and chovies. We used to fish the mouths of various creeks from a small lapstrake skiff that I rescued from a barn and restored. We slaughtered the chums down there. I like fishing the salt/estuary fisheries and more importantly I love a road trip. The two are easily satisfied by the south sound chum fishery. The other part is the solitude, Whatcom Creek and the wall are fun but not exactly a peaceful relaxing fishery. The fish pictured was huge, I wish that I had got a accurate girth measurement. I got a 23 pounder there last year and this fish was much bigger so who knows how big it really was.
