12/2/2011 8:51:00 PMIf that was a hatchery fish it should have got bonked. If we dont keep tje hatchery fish they dont show up on the tag then the state will see less value in funding the hatchery. And if your are going to release a gish then it should not come out of the water like that. Eevn if it means you can get a good pic.

12/2/2011 10:41:00 PMHey Pendelton i have an excess of fish in the freezer this year, it was my choice to release her because i didn't have a cooler with me for transport back home and didn't want it to sit out all day and spoil while i fish. I do agree with you that the fish probably should not have been brought out of the water to take a picture if i was going to release it but i didnt break any rules so ease up please!

These steelhead are way tougher than their put and take rainbow cousins. If it was wild that would be a different matter, but mainly because it's a reg violation. But, not wild, no violation.

Might want to read page 21 at the bottom of the page on releasing salmon and steelhead. From the regs FRESHWATER: “It is unlawful to totally remove salmon, steelhead, or Dolly Varden/Bull Trout from the water if it is unlawful to retain those fish, or if the angler subsequently releases the salmon, steelhead, Dolly Varden/Bull Trout.”

12/3/2011 7:23:00 PMDefinitely do not take out any fish you don't wish to retain...even a hatchery. My brother is a fish biologist for the state and they WANT people to take out the hatchery fish because they don't want them interbreeding with the native stock AND the hatcheries dump so much money into them that they want a return on investment ie: money poured into local economies (bait, tackle, lodging, gear etc...). So, keep hatcheries if at all possible. One other thing, don't go fishing without something to keep your catch in. Take some proactive measures by putting a Styrofoam box with a $1 bag of ice in your rig every time you go out so you don't release something dead cause you couldn't keep it....talk about a waste. Nice fish though
