6/27/2012 1:23:00 PMProcess wastewater is generated from the pulp making processes, paper machine and steam
plant. Chemicals used in the pulp mill include sodium hydroxide, sulfur dioxide, borol, EDTA
and chlorine. Smaller quantities of cleaning chemicals, slimicides and paper dyes are also used.
The production of de-ink newsprint uses sodium hydroxide, hydrogen peroxide, silicate and a
fatty acid soap collector. (Probably why you see suds in the river sometimes)
DISCHARGE OUTFALL
Treated effluent is discharged to the Pend Oreille River at River Mile 72.6, through a multiport
diffuser. The diffuser is about 280 feet wide with 14 discharge ports. At ordinary high river
elevation, the river is about 2000 feet wide at the point of discharge, with the diffuser extending
about 850 feet into the river channel.
