Hit the Puyallup this morning with my brother Gerry. Had a great time. It was his first time drift fishing. Spent some time teaching him how to tie up and the fine art of river etiquette. Tried a few different yarn and corkie color combinations in the process (black yarn & white #12 corkie, chartreuse yarn & orange #12 corkie, red yarn & black #12 corkie) and several different leader lengths. The red & black combination was the clear winner.

I picked up a nice 4 lbs hatchery King Jack on the first cast after changing to red. Then my brother hooked a feisty real deal King after we changed him over to red. Got snagged in an unseen obstacle down river after a five minute fight. Try as we might we couldn't get it unstuck. What a let down when the leader finally gave way! Hope the fish got away to fight another day. Either way, we both had fun and are looking forward to getting back out next week.

We were using light tackle, Med-Light rods, Maxima High Visibility 12 lbs main line, Berkley 10 lbs leader (5-6 feet), 1 oz canonball weights, #2 Gamakatsu hooks. Tight lines!

At least somebody is catching something! Where were ya'll at? I have been by the 76 gas station on river road everytime and not one bit of luck other than one hook, then it jumped out of the water to laugh at me and broke my line...

@rjohnson8706 - We fished at two spots. I caught my fish at the 5th St Bridge. My brother hooked his fish by the 512 Bridge behind the Safeway.
@fishenfreak - I think you are right it had white gums. I've made that mistake before. What threw me was the color on it's back. If you look at the picture with me holding it you can see it's back was kind of olive/tan. A color I've seen on many Kings, but not many Coho.

Liked the write-up! Sounds like fun! How come didn't one of you just take a float/swim and see if you couldnt untangle? It sure is hot enough. I have been river-snorkeling upper Sky and WOW... don't even need a wetsuit. Sick seeing the Steelies dumped in July just hanging out as floating over them!

Fresh coho for sure. If you can't tell by the body markings, check the mouth. On a chinook it will look as if someone used black spray paint in there and oversprayed down the "chin" of the fish.

Nice catch!
I did have to comment on jethro's recommendation of swimming in the river.....I hope he's joking.
I know of three people who've drowned in the Puyallup this year already!
I wear a fishing life jacket personally.

Thanks everyone for tips on identification. @ignorantfisherman - Thanks for the reminder about the need to be safe on the river. The Puyallup is running high right now, current is deceptive and can kill the strongest of us. As much as we wanted that fish yesterday we want to live to fish another day!

Below tree line. No hookups for me though...I fish closer to the mouth of the river...right across that new orchard like field...
