Too nice a day to sit at home so waited for some water to get into Ebey Slough, loaded up the sturgeon gear, and the Mrs. and I headed up to Steamboat Slough. Within an hour we had a 49" keeper in the boat. Enjoyed the eagles, herons and perfect weather to complete the day!

About 15 minutes...I use a 7' Ugly Stik Tiger rod that I use for saltwater bottom fish jigging and 80# PowerPro braided line. You don't need that much rod, lots of guys use a heavy salmon rod, but if you hook one of the "big 'uns" it's nice to have the backbone in the rod to keep the fight relatively short for a fish you will have to release.

Nice fish. I know nothing about catching or cleaning that fish. It must have a lot of meat? Do they taste good?

Excellent catch, Dutchman! Curious if you were just doing a plunk-rig w/ store brought shrimp in the slough for that... @BassSlayer... YEAH! THEIR MEAT IS PHENOMENAL!

Store bought live (?) sandshrimp on 6/0 barbless with sinker slider and 4 oz sinker on the bottom. Boat anchored, incoming tide made for reasonable current to spread the scent. I bought the sandshrimp on Tues afternoon, stored in the refrig, but they were basically dead by fishing time...sturgeon didn't seem to mind, but I'm sure fresher is better. BassSlayer: good videos on filleting sturgeon on YouTube...not much different than doing a salmon, but bigger! Word is to get them bled quickly, and cleaned promptly. Regs say keep them "intact" while in the field, probably for length legality. I cut a couple of gills and hung the fish in the water on a rope to bleed out. Then I gutted it before loading it for the trip home. This will be our first attempt at eating one so the wife is researching recipes!

Dutchman--- they taste really good brined/smoked w/ w/e recipe you like. Used to get a bunch from the Tribes when buying salmon in bulk for resale... pretty much cant go wrong. I can say, like a lot of fish, the smaller sizes are much more tender!

Very nice fish! Good to see someone's catching them. I got two a few years ago, but haven't been able to replicate it. We mostly made fish tacos with ours, breading them in panko and frying then in a tortilla with some cabbage and mango salsa. It's great!
