After a week of coho fishing, finally got back out on the samish with 2 clients today on the upper river. MAN theres a lot of fish stacking up now! problem is, a lot of them are turning very dark, and although super fun to catch a 25lb king, dark or not, the rule that makes you keep or quit after 2 legal fish can get ANNOYING when you catch your limit of dark fish in the first hour of the morning, today we actually did find a few chromers, we bonked our 6 fish, 2 really nice chrome fish, 3 medium bronze fish, great for smoking, and were forced to bonk a NASTY buck, ahah hopefully it will at least be edible smoked! We hooked probably 15-20 kings today, lots were BIG and broke us off, but they jumped a bit and we got good looks at them, all in good fun, released 2 huge bucks, one was 27 lb the other was probably 25 (we weighed one in the net) the fish were hooked on the side of the lip, it was right on the edge of being inside the mouth but i figured it was close enough so we released them, both big, dark hogs. saw some silvers rolling and landed one nice native coho too, probably a 12 lber!
Im trying to figure out a way to put my eggs above my hook, like a pegged single egg but with a clump of roe, so when i set the hook on a biter, the hook nails them on the outside of the mouth so i can do some catch and release on these nasty dark fish until we get a chromer fish or 2, not sure if thats legal or not i guess i will call and make sure, but as long as theyre biting i dont see a problem. let ya know if i figure it out!
Check out the pics below, the limit and the big 27lber we released
