Got to the river and line wet around 5pm. I was excited because I could instantly see fish jumping and rolling left and right. Had the float already tied on, so I threw some eggs on and began my drift. Got a bite, bobber down, on the 5th or 6th cast, but couldn't make it stick. Tried floating the eggs for another 45 mins or so before I switched to a wee DN. Got absolutely nothing on the DN after another half hour, so it was time to switch it up again. I needed to rig up a few things, so I decided to tie on a spin-n-glo and try some plunking while I rigged. Started getting some mean hits almost instantly. I kept my rod in the holder, waiting for the fish to hook themselves, but this never happened. I picked up the rod and tried to set on the next few hits, but still couldn't get anything to stick. I was a little frustrated having gotten hits but no take-downs, yet satisfied that I am at least on the right track. Didn't see any body else have any luck, no fish on or pulled in out of the six or seven others that were visible. I think that part of my problem is the way in which I am putting the eggs in my loop. I need less sac on the shank and more by the point, so I will experiment with it tomorrow. Quick question for all you vets out there... Do you hold your rod while plunking and set on bites, leave it in the holder until you're sure its hooked, or a combination of both? Thanks, good luck out there and tight lines!

I would wait for them to inhale it. The spin and glow is a little big to be setting it on just a nibble, it will be hard for that salmon hook to set right and catch a gill or the side of the mouth. I can't tell you how many times I wasn't patient enough to wait for my rod to completely dip before I set the hook and lost a potential catch. Actually did it just this last weekend on the Green. I was passed the log jam on the other side of th bend on top of a big log crossing about 6-8 ft off the top of the water. I was just sitting up there. I could actually see everything that was going on near the bottom. The salmon wanted nothing to do with it accept for a tail slap here and there, but the steelhead and cutthroats were digging it. Tons of little guys wanted it but couldn't swallow the shrimp I was using. Had one GIANT steelhead, about 10 lbs go up and mouth it and I didn't wait long enough for it to swallow the hook and just watched the lure fly right out when I set it and my trophy steelhead dart away like a speeding bullet. Very dissappointed.

I have been trying to be patient and waiting for them to set themselves, but it just isn't happening. They are definitely going after it, my rod is getting hit hard, but in very short bursts. Then, when all the eggs are gone, so are the bites. I had my eggs higher on my hook shank, hoping that if they are going after the eggs, the hook would be trailing and get 'em, but that wasn't working. So I decided to try and move the eggs a little lower on the hook toward the point so that if they were mouthing the eggs, they would be mouthing the hook, but still got nothing. Oh well, guess I will just have to be more patient.
