I just want to start by saying that this is going to be a long winded report... you are warned. This report is for sat oct 6 and sun oct 7, I wanted to report each individually, but the site was down so I was forced to lump them into one.
I haven't been having any luck on the green since it opened on the first, so it was time to change things up. I went to auburn marine on friday oct 5 and got myself a new 9 1/2 foot baitcasting rod and reel for salmon and steelhead. I got to the river by 6am on sat oct 6 and had lines wet by 6:30 after setting my float and everything up. It was still dark out and I got 10 good casts in and of course, I backlash the thing like crazy and my new set up was a $200 rats-nest. Luckily I brought a spinning rod in case something like this happened. I made a few casts with some jigs and spinners, but had no luck. I really wanted to play with my new toy, so I set up a plunking rig so I could have a line wet while I untangle everything. After almost 2 hours, I was finally able to get everything working again. Finally got the reel dialed and was starting to work my float through a couple slots. After 15 or 20 casts/drifts, I got a bobber down. Wait, it's been so long, what am I supposed to do again? Oh yeah, set the hook and reel! After I set the hook, I felt a couple head shakes. Indeed, fish on! It made a small run, maybe 10 feet and then stopped. I started to reel and it felt like an anchor. I kept reeling and I was finally able to see the pig. Looked big, almost too big for a silver. Sure enough, got it close and confirmed that it was a king. Got it's head out of the water just long enough to get my hook back and snap a quick pic. My first fish out of the green was a decent sized king, right around 20lbs. Stoked. Fished til about noon with no other hits and called it a day.
Having caught that king on sat, I knew that I had to be back out there sun as well. Showed up to the river a little later this time, around 6:45am. Got everything set up and I started working the same slots that I worked the previous day. Got about 20 casts/drifts in and then boom, bobber down in almost the exact same spot as the king. I set the hook and then sure enough, head shakes, fish on! This one was much more angry than that log of a king. It instantly started taking line. He made 3 or 4 big runs before I finally started to take control. I was able to get it close enough to get a look at him. I think that he saw me too cause he instantly made a viscous run toward some sunken trees. NOOOO!!! Anywhere but there! I tried my best to keep him away from the sunken hazards, but he rubbed my leader on one of the trees and was gone. Even though I lost it, it was one of the best fights that I've ever had with any fish. Kept fishing again til around noon and decided to call it a day again. Walked back to the car and... crap. Broken window, some one broke in. Luckily there was absolutely nothing in my car (not even a stereo because that was stolen when my car was broken into 2 weeks ago). I was just mad that I have to get a new window now...Stupid Tweakers!
Got home and cleaned up the glass. Talked to my girlfriend and she wants to go fishing now too, so back to the green we go, after a not so quick detour to chuck buzz bombs at browns point of course (fished for about an hour and got nothing). Got back to the green around 4:30 and I decided to move up stream about 50ft from my previous hole. Got my first bobber down around 5:30. Felt a couple head shakes and then it was gone. Hmm, must not have set the hook hard enough. I got my next bobber down around 6:30 and this time it stuck...kinda. Felt the shakes, took a small run, then just spit my hook. Fished for another hour and got nothing.
So, overall... I got my first green salmon, but still waiting for my first green keeper. I am getting very close, I can taste it. Love the new rod/reel, even after untangling 100 yards of line. The fish are definitely out there, but you have to put in work to get at them. I have seen plenty of other anglers out there each day, but not a single fish pulled beside the king. Sorry about the pic, all I had was my cell and I was in a rush to get him back in the water. Good luck out there and tight lines.
