After a morning meeting we went down to check out the satsop river and see if we couldnt find a late coho. Went up to shafer park first not much was happening up there. So we moved down to the few barely accessible holes. Despite it being monday one of the holes you have to climb down into had 4 boats fishing it and one boat tied up to the only fishable spot from the bank. The other hole was being fished by two boats and had other boats motoring by at full speed. The river was noisy and busy, reminded me of the cowlitz. So we quickly gave up and went to check out the black river for the first time. The dark slow water didnt seem like the best river for salmon but it was worth a try. We went up to an access spot where the water was a little faster. My guy floated eggs while I plunked eggs and a spin and glow. Didnt see any fish activity but it only took minutes to hook our first fish. After a fun little fight a big northern pike minnow was beached. : ( then another and another, all of them over 15" one was huge, at least a few pounds. Pike minnow after pike minnow. I dont even know how any coho smolt make it out of that river. It was ridiculous.
