What an amazing pink salmon season it was on the Snohomish River! I was fortunate enough to be able to take 19 days off during the run and fished most days during that time period. Only twice did we have to work for our fish, once on one of the days when it rained, (two of us managed 4 fish) and one other trip where I took a new friend from Gambia out and we managed 2. Every other trip yielded limits in record time with lots of opportunity to enjoy some catch and release before heading in. Our success was credited to looking for schools of fish which on some days took a little time, then simply casting pink squid jigs to them. Not rocket science and a great fishery to expose new comers to salmon fishing.
On our most recent trip, yesterday September 13th, my buddy Chris and I were on the water by 10:15 and heading back in by noon with our two limits. We found a huge school of fish holding in one of our tried and true spots and I noted that this time around it took several casts to get a strike which in my experience indicates the fish may now be more driven to head upstream to spawn vs feeding. Like I said, we still caught limits quickly but not as quickly as trips over the last two weeks.
I noted many trolling for silvers but I didn't see any caught which is not to say people didn't catch silvers but I think it may just be a little early for silvers in the river but I'm no expert. Looking forward to the next couple of weeks as more silvers enter the river system.
