Hit the Samish for the first time today. Worked my way up and down river around the train tracks and the I-5 bridge. First cast at 6am, and fished until 11am...couldn't get a bite to save my life. And there were fish in the water. They were jumping within 10 feet of me all morning long, but they wouldn't take any offerings. I had 2 buddies with me, same deal for them.
There were locals fishing, and they weren't getting anything either and they said these holes are usually real good. In 5 hours of fishing, I didn't see one person land a fish. One guy foul hooked a smaller King by the tail, but that was the only action I saw all day.
The fish were there...they just weren't interested in anything anyone offered today.
Here's what I tried...I threw the kitchen sink at them! LOL
Floating eggs (tried both orange and red)
Trying different depths for the float
Floating eggs with a corky and yarn (actually an aero drifter) above the hook (tried every color I had over the course of the morning)
Drifting eggs (tried different weights from as small as one split shot up to 3/8oz, also tried different leader lengths and different casts)...that river is more like a creek. There is hardly any current at all in a lot of the holes there.
Drifting aero drifters (orange, green, yellow, yellow with red spots, red/black, red, white/black/red)
Drifting eggs and aero drifters together
Moved up and down river to try different holes
And then the locals were jigging and using spinners and that didn't get any action either.
I will say, I did see some Kings pretty clearly when they jumped and they were DARK. Like black dark. But there were a couple that were beefy. They just wouldn't hit anything for anyone.
It was a total bust today...oh well, back to the drawing board.
