Didn't think I'd get a chance to go fishing today, but change of family plans gave me a few hours to run to the river. Hit the water about 12:30p. Started drifting eggs, but lost a couple setups to the river, so thought I'd try twitching a jig to see if anything was interested. Nope. The spot I was in wasn't great for that method anyhow, so went back to eggs. About 30 minutes in I finally hooked something that fought back. Took my time pulling in a 23" hen that was plenty bright, so at least I was going home with something. Spent the next hour donating gear to the river and then hooked into something bigger. It went berserk right away and started running back and forth across the current stripping line on every bolt. Next it came to the surface and started the arial show. It was a beautiful large chrome something or another. Somewhere around the third double backflip with a half twist the knot from the leader to my swivel failed. That fish wasn't quite done fighting yet and did a couple more aerials for my enjoyment before settling back into the current. I shook that loss off and tied up again. Over the next hour I had a few hits, donated some more gear to the river, and pulled in a couple sticks of firewood. I was now getting low on eggs, down to my last couple pre-tied leaders, and it was about time for me to be heading home, so knew I was throwing my last few casts. Towards the end of the next drift it got hammered. Again, it was a larger fish. It didn't quite go berserk but made a determined beeline for the far shore stripping line off the reel. I was able to turn it and start gaining ground. It made a couple pushes to the surface, but would just boil the water before heading back to the bottom. I finally got it to show itself while still out in the middle and saw it was a slightly colored fish that I think might have had double digit potential. Right after that it decided to start some serious head shakes. A few of those and the hooked popped out. At that point I loudly exclaimed the frustration of back to back losses and decided it was time to go home at 3pm. Went 1/3, but got some healthy looking skeins to replenish my dwindling egg supply, had my Coho confidence boosted, and got a couple pounds of fillets to put in the freezer. So, happy to at least have that much as well as it just being a beautiful day to be on the river bank.
