Fished the Duw on the incoming tide. There was the occasional splish and splash from passing coho so starting with spinners and working through the usual gear to no avail I was working the remainder of a quickly diminishing slot drifting eggs when the steady bump... bump... did a slight wiggle and tug. It supprised me a bit and i figured I was too late to react so I let it finish out, pulled it in and yup the eggs are gone. I re-bait and hurl it out to same spot as before but this time I was ready. With my rod arm set like a mouse trap the bump went wiggle and then tu-SNAP! I felt the weight as the hook set and the fish rocketed for the surface and the following 5 min or so this fish did things to try and convince me not to bring him to shore that I have not seen in a very long time but I'm not having any of it. He almost had his way when I had him to the bank and all tuckered out and realized I had not brought my net. Well between us is about eight feet of ankle deep mud and if I dont waste any time with it I can carefully slide him accross it and on over to me right? Well yes, to a point, of about half way before the leader broke so what else could I do? I threw all caution to the wind and leaped into that slimy Duwamish goo on all fours and tailed my prize before the inevitable flip flop gone trick for one chrome bright 30 " hatch buck steel.
