Wow! That's all I can say about this week. The fishing is fantastic on the Snohomish system, and we're loving this rain. Who would have thought that we'd be happy as a clam fishing in the downpour.
Want to know the secret? Good quality eggs drifted through the deep pools. Unfortunately, store bought eggs just aren't up to snuff. The good news is that the Skykomish hatchery creek, the Wallace River, is stacked full of darker hens, with nice plump eggs. With the rain, there will be fresher fish pushing up so a chance at a chromer up there is getting better.
The real money is in the Snohomish river. While there are pods of fish stacked in a few select secret spots, there are bright fish throughout the system. There are enough fish to be picky about what you take home, and with my knowledge, you have a very good chance at picking up some quality fish.
Another good sign is that we've picked up some winter steelhead! That's a bonus and hopefully it is a sign of good things to come later in the month and throughout December. I'm already booking Peninsula trips for hatchery steelhead on the Queets and other area rivers, both bank trips and in the drift boat. Believe me, a change of scenery from the crowded greater Seattle area rivers is totally worth the trip. There are limited days available, so get in touch with me sooner, rather than later as I'm already filling up the schedule. You really don't want to miss out on a steelhead trip in my luxurious heated Pavati drifter. Warmth and comfort and big fish. It's this time of year when I really love my job.
Another thing to keep in mind are the chum and steelhead trips I'm running on the Green river. We're already picking up a number of chum out there, and while they aren't the best for table fare, they are fantastic fighters, and can run from medium to very, very large and feisty. I love these guys, they're one of my favorite fish to catch and in the height of the season expect days of fish in the double digits.
And I know a lot of you have been waiting for me to let you know that the coast is going to fish well, and this rain is going to do it. We've had significant rises and drops in levels, and I'm confident that the fishing will be much better than in the past few weeks. So give me a call and we can make the trip, it's a trip for the memory books out there, and there's been no better time this season than now to get out there and bag a big coastal salmon.
We have a few more weeks of good coho fishing around here, with eggs, jigs and spinners, your going to get some great take downs with some quality fish. For those of you on the bank, I'd recommend fishing the area around the 522 bridge and Thomas Eddy. There are good numbers of fish in both areas, and although not as productive as my boat, you'll bring a fish or two home with good bait.
