Got a text last night from a guide friend "You workin tomorrow or do you wanna be sick?" Suddenly I was feeling a mental health day was in order. Turns out he had reconfigured his cataraft and wanted to iron any bugs out before putting clients in the boat. Heck yeah I'm in!
We launched at high bridge at daylight, not too long into the morning I C&R'ed a 12" Dolly. Not long after I had a bobber down and a HEAVY head shake that snapped my leader, don't know what it was but it was big. Next another guy hit a little whitefish.
Late morning as we came out of some rapids into a hole we saw a fish rise ahead of us. Immediately anchored up and started casting. A couple casts and one unidentified fish is hooked and lost. 5 min later I threw out a hevi bead and my bobber takes a dive. It is a decent sized coho buck, a little red to him and probably would have been good to smoke but released to go finish his business.
I hadn't even gotten a cast in when one of our guys hooks up with a bright coho, then another gets slammed and taken for a ride. Nice wild summer run, released. While he was rebaiting I tossed out a jig, turned to ask what color he was using and felt my rod trying to leave my hands. I yanked back and the fight was on. Couple minutes later and I'm bonking my 1st hatchery winter steelhead of the season, about 8# and still had sea lice.
10 minutes after I punched that one another guy hooks up a big ol moldy chum. Fished the hole for another 30 minutes with no action so we were all taking last casts before moving on when another of our group has his spoon slammed... By a whitefish of all things.
The rest of the float was quiet in comparison. I few more hits and misses, but nothing more landed. We pulled out at Sultan about 3:30pm
In the end it was a beautiful sunny day spent with some great people who all caught fish.
Final talley from the 4 of us:
1 Dolley
2 coho
1 summer steelhead
1 winter steelhead
1 chum
2 whitefish
We caught fish with float and jig, bobber dogging, float and heavy bead, drifting eggs and spoons
