I wanted to learn new fishing/techniques and Whitefish was on my list. I remember back in the late 70s early 80s while riding to Long Lake to my Great Grandmothers place when I was young, seeing guys fishing the Little Spokane in the winter. I later found out the were fishing for Whitefish. In the last 30 yrs I always wanted to do it but never did. I never even caught a Whitefish. As I found out yesterday when I caught the first one.

I contacted Rocky WL.com member after seeing his reports for Whitfish on the Spokane below Nine MIle Falls. We met up yesterday morning at 10 at the gate and I followed him to the parking spot. Rocky gave me some tackle bait ect to use for these fish. It was different method then I was inticapating. We got started around 10:30 and my third cast I got one. Not the fish I had always thaught was a Whitefish. They remind me of a cross between a Greyling and a Bonefish. We continued to catch and lose fish for the next 2 hrs. Then it took us the next hr and half to get our last fish. I got greedy wanting for fish in the 14" range and kept throwing the little ones back then the bite died. I caught one fell on the snow covered rock and he squirmed to the river. I finally got my last fish and I waited for Rocky to do the same.

I had a great time catching, missing and losing fish. Most of all making a new fishing friend. Thats whats it all about! Thanks Rocky for sharing your expertise.

I must have thought Peamouth Chub was a Whitefish!

I forgot to grab my Discouvery pass out of my truck. I thaught I would hear if a ranger stopped and I would say hey..... Well got down the road 5 miles then I noticed the $99 ticket on my windshield. CRAP!

Neat report, always good to learn new baits and techniques when trying a new spot or targeting a new species. Wouldn't the WDFW parking pass have worked as well?

Thats the one I left in my truck. I guess I do not have a true discouvery pass. It sure is upsetting that our tax dollars isn't enough.

I forgot to mention I caught a pretty 12" rainbow and Rocky caught beautifull 16" Brown
They were released to live another day.

You said it was different fishing than you were anticipating. What did you use and how, and what were you expecting? Just wondering. I used to live in Alberta and caught whitefish in the rivers up there on flies with maggots on em, with either a split shot for weight or a piece of coat hanger to bounce the bottom. The big time to get them was late August through to October; they spawned then and would be schooled up. later by November or December the rivers would be frozen a fair ways toward the middle and too dangerous to walk out on. i never thought about it before but they do look like a bonefish.

Bummer about the ticket. I think the rule of thumb is the government thinks there just aren't enough passes we have to buy.

Thanks for the report. I get interested when I see your user name on here. you strike me as a good overall fisherman, Wish I had your ambition and follow through.

Iwillfish, I was expecting it a little different, but it was simular. We did 2 flies on short leaders above the sinker. I was expexting longer leaders and I guess a set up more like I used to do with a corky/roe. Rocky say something about friends using wire also.

Nice report buddy glad you got to mark a fish off your list. Typical that you would get a ticket, you know the state needs more of your money lol...I've donated my share lol

I'm confused, in the regulation book, it says hunters and fishermen don't need to purchase a separate discovery pass if they are purchasing a hunting/fishing license. That would lead me to believe the WDFW access pass that is given to you with your license would suffice? I think I would print that page out of the regulations and appeal that one.
