Went up to the highway side at Reiter early this morning. I started drifting a single orange glow cheater around 4:45 and continued with that for about 45 minutes. At one point it felt like I had something on for a moment, but whatever it was it didn't feel very big and came off pretty quick. I saw Reel Priorities walk by early on and chatted with him for a moment. Eventually I switched over to floating a jig, starting off with an 1/8oz nightmare pattern. I worked the water pretty good with that jig to no luck, so I tied on an 1/8oz pink and orange jig with a longer leader and went back to fishing. While working that jig out deep I saw a fish roll about 25' from me, so I reeled in quickly, shortened up my depth, and started fishing the spot where I saw the fish roll. About four casts into that spot my float got absolutely buried, I set the hook, and it was fish on with my first summer run! No acrobatics from this fish, but it took a couple of good dives that got my heart pounding. After a decent fight I got the fish to shore and unfortunately broke my leader trying to beach it, luckily it was far enough ashore that I could get a hold of it. Took some quick pictures and booked it outta there to make it in to work. The fish came in just over 5#. All in all, a nice morning on the river!
