Fished the Skok for the first time Friday. What a site....I would say I was there fishing with a lot of other fisherman but that's not the case. I may have seen ten of the 200 people fishing, the rest were just ripping hooks through holes and snagging fish, bringing them onto the bank, yelling up to their buddy that they hooked it in the mouth and then filling out their catch card. Must be something about the fish in the Skok, they come onto the bank tail first when they are hooked in the mouth, some sort of reverse swimming technique unique to theses salmon...weird i know... I had brought my fly rod hoping to find some peace and get one of these fish to bite away from the pressure, (which i did, my buddy and I brought 4 legal biting fish home) and i saw another fly fisherman...it was a relief to see someone fishing not snagging so i walked over to talk to him and asked him what fly he was using...and he had a bare 6/0 red hook and said they really like this..ok....even after talking to the local guys down there it was obvious that with the lack of pressure from any fish and game regulation (not one seen at the river even after reporting four tail hooked fish kept and one native adipose CLIPPED off to keep!!!) ..this is how you catch fish here..snag your two and get out of there.Really a disappointment to see. Aside from that, i hiked about two miles in, with no snaggers anywhere, and found a handfull of legit bobber fishing anglers, all close to their limits, we got our limit and got out.

If you want to flyfish the skok, the most popular pattern to fish is the skokomish sunrise - 4/0 treble with with 5 or 6 wraps of 1/4 inch lead... I hear they always get hooked in the mouth on that pattern...

Ahhh the good ole "Skok Fly"...catches them in the "Skok Mouth" every time! And those are both real terms...LOL

I just fish my way, keep quiet and mind my business. Some questionable characters on the Skok and it will catch up with them eventually.

Welcome to the Skok! It is pretty sickening seeing that every year. I love that river because it produces a lot of beautiful fish. It is a shame there are so many that "fish" (term used very loosely) the river like that. I use a corky and yarn and have no problem actually catching fish properly. I'd love to drift eggs, but it seems during king season there isn't any room left on the river because of all the asshats playing snag-fest. We coined a term "the Skok hook set" or "the Skok jerk," [either term is used] Yeah... that's when you let your weight sink to the bottom, preferably with nothing, or maybe a sliver of yarn (Skok Fly) on your hook, then rip your rod over your head until it hits the water behind you. That's how you catch them in the "Skok Mouth!" I've been up there the last couple weekend chum fishing though and there is very few fisherman. We have been putting 10+ chum each on the bank daily caught in the real mouth, not to be confused with the "Skok Mouth." Wednesday I was up there and pulled a bunch of nice hens out that were still very pretty. Went up this morning though and the river seemed empty.
