Heading back home after the skunk at Scanewa, I dropped the wife of a Mayfield lake to cruise around on the pontoon boat, while I went down to barrier dam to scope out the scene. Maybe just because it was Sunday afternoon at the end of the springer run, but there were only about 10 people there, I was expecting it to be a little crazier.
I found a spot and started casting out the eggs under float, those guys with the 10+ foot poles sure can cast a long ways. I was below the out flow, but could not quite cast into the slower channel close to the dam where the fish seemed to be jumping around.
After about an hour or so the three guys out on the island left so I waded across to get a better angle into the slower water. Out of practice I kept getting some nice birds nests in my line, the adjustment on my Abu Garcia are very touchy, with super free spinning or too much resistance and the line does not spool out.
Untangling one of those I watched the float go down as the line got pulled down the rapids, I just thought I must have caught the rock so I just fixed my line and was reeling in the slack and what do you know there was a fish on! Unfortunately it was not what I was looking for, not sure exactly what is was pike minnow or white fish? Let it swim off since I did not exactly what it was or what the current regs were since I did not have my WDFW booklet. Further review found it is closed to game fish until June 1st, so probably a wise decision.
