Decided to take the family out for a little Humpy fun on the Skagit this morning. Of course with kids it took us a while to get out there on the river but we made it out to the Mount Vernon sand bar just North of the bridge around 9:30am. Lots of people doiwn by the bridge and up by the boat launch. We found a nice open spot right inbetween the crowds with enough room to throw out some sand shrimp and drift old trusty (chartreuse n Nickle medium dicknite).
Water was pretty colored up due to the one day of rain we had yesterday so I was thinking Shrimp was going to be the hot ticket, as did every other person on the sand bar. Surprisingly that rod never even got a bump but as you can see from one of the pictures the little guy was keeping a close eye on the plunkin rod which freed me up for some drifting which is by far what I prefer. First tried the pink n white wicked willy without success. Switched to old trusty and first cast a small hen slammed it and ran straight for shore. I just had to keep up with the slack and she beached herself. Got a quick picture with the wide eyed little guy and threw her on the stringer. Next cast another slammed it but was quick to spit it on the first jump. Hooked 1 more and landed it on the last cast of the day and let my son get on the reel with only slight help from his papa :) luckily this feisty little buck put up a good fight for him!
Two things made this a 5 star day.
1) A boy and his daddy caught fish which is always an instant deposit in the memory bank!
2) No one else on the beach had anything touch their shrimp. Even saw 3 guys wade out a good distance to try to cast their shrimp all the way to the other bank. I got a good chuckle when I hooked those 3 fish right in the seam they were standing in to cast. The fish were literally jumping right at their feet. I hope they saw something over there worth casting at :) I didnt mind the action right in front of them!
Hope everyone is having lots of fun and being respectful of the rivers. Couldnt believe the amount of garbage I hauled out...
