Got to the river around 3:00 PM. I was pleased to find my favorite spot was empty but there were people fishing on the opposite side. I was using a GL medium fast action 8 or 8'6" spinning rod with 8 pound line, 1/2 ounce cannon ball, 6.5" leader and a 10mm orange corkie with orange yarn and a #2 gammie. I was really hoping to hook into a king but it was not to be. I fished long drifts caught 5 or more fish an hour until about 7 pm when I decided to pack it up. The pinks are in and they aren't hard to catch if you know what you are doing. A bit of herring scent on your yarn might help (I don't think this counts as bait).

On another note the river bank is filthy. I normally pack out way more trash than I create. Today I am going back armed with a couple of trash bags. People on the FB pages have been going nuts over this. The bottom line is that people will continue to be jerks and litter. It is up to those that really want to protect our ability to fish these popular rivers to clean up out there. It isn't right but it is what it is.

I also saw some kids in their late teens or early twenties fishing without corkies or yarn. They werent really snagging but they managed to floss a few. They saw me hooking fish and decided to keep casting straight up stream to wehere I was casting. They continually threw over me and snagged my line. I told them what they were doing wrong and offered to give them corkies and yarn and coach them on the right way to catch fish. They ended up digging out some of their own yarn and tying it on.

Tight lines everyone. Enjoy the circus out there.

Yes, scent is bait. As to the whole flossing thing, I'll hold my tongue...

I'd like to Thank You for your willingness to pick up other people's trash & for keeping your cool with the teenagers. That could have gone 1 of 2 ways & you took it upon yourself to better the situation, rather than add to it. I wish you tight lines.

Puyallup is anti-snagging rule... not selective gear. scent is fine

The regs say that most of the puyallup (804) falls under the anti snagging rule and barb less hooks. It doesn't actually say anything about scent or bait. Just reread it. By definition in the regs yarn scented with smelly jelly would be bait but it doesn't matter because the regs do not state no bait or selective gear only.

I was just clarifying the whole scent/bait thing. Is it legal? Sure. Is flossing legal? Yes. Is almost everyone on the puke flossing? Probably, but what do you expect when everyone is drifting with leaders exceeding 6"... Water clarity is less than 2" with that silt. Why would anyone need a longer leader than 2"? Do what you must on the puke, I'm not judging...

No offense, but it sounds like you are.... you're just choosing to keep that to yourself... but really; if it's legal why the issue? I've noticed a few on this board that take serious issue with people doing legal things. The legal standard is the expectation for the public, till that is changed, can we let the people enjoy their time fishing?

I agree with machewbacca. As I stated in my post I was not flossing the kids on the other side of the river were. At least after I said something they put corkies on so they were legal. Scent is legal and increases the chances of catching something other than a pink. You stated that you know how murky the water is. What is the issue?
I can also say that I cannot remember a single occasion when I was fishing for salmon and used a 2' leader. Not drifting, not trolling, not back bouncing, not bobber dogging..... never. I believe that leader length is dependent upon the type of fishing you are doing and the depth and speed of the current. I played around with leaders ranging from 3.5' to over 8' and found a little over 6' to be the best for the conditions in which I was fishing. If you can catch salmon with a 2' leader than great. To each his own.
