Pink Salmon

This is my first post, so any constructive criticism is welcomed. That being said; I got to Thomas' Eddy around 4pm and tied on a Dick Nite #1 spoon in 50/50 Copper/Nickel with a bass casting weight 2ft above the spoon, pinched the barb and started fishing. Second cast and fish on! I fought with it for a good 3 minutes or so since I forgot my net (go figure) until it was tired enough to grab it out of the water. I landed my first Pink Salmon and added a new species to the list. After gilling it, I threw him in the cooler and began the hunt for another. I fished until 7 before moving spots to the middle of the slack water pool. There were about 10 people fishing from the bank and I saw a few fish caught on what looked like pink Hoochie jigs. One guy was snagging them with a treble hook and a weight. He was also there the previous day and limited out in about 20 minutes. A few guys said something to him including myself and upon seeing him again yesterday, I called the hotline and reported a violation in progress. I dont think anything will be done about it unless enough calls are made, but as a fisherman I feel the obligation to help keep people like this from getting away with illegal taking of fish. I did see fish rolling in the middle of the river however I also fished August 18th and they were rolling way more than yesterday. Based on my observations, pink jigs and spoons are the only things that should be thrown as these seem to be catching 90% of the fish that I saw caught.

Good luck out there!

Nice job adding a species to your list. I have been too busy at work to get out. One thing, you do not have to pinch your barb on the Snoho, mostly just in the salt water do you need barbless hooks (but there are always exceptions so read carefully).

Pink, pink and more pink. Shrimp oil doesn't hurt either. And as jonb has said on previous reports, moving around will really increase your odds for success. My recommendation would be to stick with one method, such as tossing a dick nite, and really master that method by moving constantly. No joke. Fish one spot for 10 or 20 minutes, and then move if you don't get anything. This could be as simple as moving 50' down the bank, or up and driving to a new spot, just don't get stuck in one place casting for hours if you aren't getting action. That is the worst thing you can do for yourself. Good job on reporting the poacher.

Thanks for the tips. I have a buddy coming up here next week and I'm hoping to be able to get him some pinks too, getting my limit would be nice too.

Why did you pinch the barb?

I'm used to Salmon fishing on the Columbia River near Tri Cities which is where I grew up. The Salmon there are heavily regulated and so I pinched the barb like I would for any salmon. For pinks in the Snohomish, you actually don't need to as 4n6fisher informed me of. Just in salt water.

Puyllalup and Nasty are same so half my gear still has barbless hooks...which I mistakenly grab and use now and then.
