This is just plain a bizzare fishery to me. Maybe I say that only because it handed my behind to me this past Sunday.
To me Rocky Ford is like fishing at the "Rainbow Trout Zoo" if there was one.
You have this beautiful spring fed creek, that you do not wade, but walk the shoreline and site fish the most amazing large bows you can imagine.
These large fish are right below you looking back at you. There are a half dozen other anglers dangling their offerings along the shoreline at these fish as well. Being a well managed catch/release fly fishing stream, these fish are extremely selective. They will turn their nose at most anything offered. I did have the advance tip from a "DrySupafly" fellow forum member, on picking up a pack of scuds and egg pattern flies from a great vending machine outside of Ephrata's fly shop.
I managed 4-5 take downs on my scud or egg fly, fished under an indicator. Although swing and a miss every time. Saw only 3-4 fish caught all say, although they were all on olive scuds i believe. Again, these are trophy bows, not your WDFW planters.
Partner, "Motoboat" hooked up with a solid fish one time, but came off.

I'm not dissin' the creek, but at least for me this is a place that you really have to put your man hours into, or bring an experienced friend.

It's hit and miss at the Ford, I prefer the broken water below the diversion dam, it's much easier to fish. Better luck next time!

You need a local "guide".

Quadfather, every success story I've read when catching these "selective trout" is you have to let the fly sit on the bottom for a while before starting your retrieve because they've seen everything from above.

Good point, Nerka. Thanks!

Ditching the indicator certainly helps. Being observant also helps with fly selection. Callibaetis and bwo hatches along with midges this time of year can change the fishing from a 1 to a 5. Good to hear that you picked up the right flies from the vending machine though.
