Thought I would avoid the crowds by fishing the 4th of July when everybody is at home with their families. Didn't see a single fisherman, and didn't see a single bite. The water had fair-to-poor visibility, and the weather was my good: light sprinkle one moment, too-warm-for-a-jacket the next. Fly fished the south bank, about a mile south of the Concrete-South Skagit bridge, for about 2 1/2 hours in the evening. Loved the river, but would rather barbeque on its banks than fish in July. Will come back for spring-run steelhead.

Mice report mjsanders. I haven't fished up that way in a coons age. Have you fished the Skagit or Cascade river yet this year?

You might check the regs before you "come back for spring-run steelhead". The spring fishery has been closed for years.

@Let's_Go_Fishing: I have not fly fished the Skagit since last summer, and I was uncomfortable when I went. I don't know the Skagit very well having only lived in WA for 2 years, and I'm certainly not an experienced fly fisherman. Trying to find accessible beaches and sections where the current doesn't sweep you off your feet was difficult for me. Perhaps a combination of not knowing my way around, nor being far enough east? I'm all ears for tips and good sections.
It's funny you mention the Cascade. I griped about the Sauk to a coworker yesterday and he said, "Why didn't you go to the Cascade?". I'm going to give it a try this Sunday, can't wait. Tips so far say to fish between the mouth and the Rockport-Cascade bridge. Guessing that hatchery has a lot to do with it? Again, all ears.

@enforcer: Shows how much I know. That sucks. So besides down stream of Mount Vernon, are there any spring openings in the area, say within an hour's drive of Sedro-Woolley?

mj, there are a lot of bank access options between the Cascade mouth and the rockport cascade rd bridge if you are willing to wade here and there, and go through the bushes a bit. Depending upon water flows, you can actually fish that entire stretch on foot. However, looking at the escapement numbers it looks like no summer steelhead have made it back to the Marblemount hatchery this year. I'm not sure if they actually stock summer run steelhead in the Cascade at all. As far as your question of spring river openings, I don't think there are any options up north. You would have to go out to the peninsula, or way down south to the Skookumchuck or Cowlitz. Or, you could always go across the border and try Canadian rivers. There is another great fishing opportunity in your area right now though. Send me a PM if you are interested and I'll give you more details.
