So this is my first post. I've enjoyed reading this forum over the past year and I'd like to contribute when possible. I'm also an East Coast transplant so I'm still learning the ways of the Northwest, where I'm from in PA we have 3 kinds of trout (brown, brook, rainbow) and the rule are universal across the state for the most part. Having to read and constantly reference an annual encyclopedia of rules is new to me but I'm doing my best to comply, if I'm inadvertently breaking a rule please just let me know and don't flame me for it. By and large I'm a catch and release angler, I usually only keep a fish if I have reason to believe he'll die anyway (long fight, swallowed hook, etc) or if I haven't kept any in awhile and want one or two in the freezer.
I went out to the Green River this Sunday more to get out in the woods than anything else, as I drove along the river heading towards Flaming Geyser (my normal parking area) it was overwhelmed by cars - mostly people rafting I think. I drove further seeking the solitude, turned right onto 164 and crossed the gorge. There were a few cars there but not many, I figured that I could find a hole nearby to relax so I parked up the hill on the far side and "geared up" with my waiters and vest. It was an interesting climb/slide down to the river on the upriver side of the bridge, at the very end of the trail I came up on two guys taking a raft down. Apparently it's a common starting point because I saw several other group come through while I was there. There's a beautiful hole about 30 yards upstream of the rafting put in, the type of hole that you see in books. Unfortunately someone was there swimming in the hole and she stayed for the majority of the time, but she was friendly enough and the deep water was long enough that I could fish around her. **Not relevant to the fishing aspect, but she tried to initiate several conversations that quickly turned weird, I later found out that this area may or may not be a tweaker campground, which would make sense due to the oddity of her conversation topics, but again - she was friendly and I never felt threatened in any way.**
There was a dead trout, approximately 12 inches, floating by the shore while I was there. I think due in large part to her swimming I wasn't able to catch anything substantial, however I did hook about 25 small salmon (I believe they were young Coho due to the side markings), most of which I didn't land due mainly to their size. They'd shake themselves off the hook once I got them close, saw what they were, and put slack in the line. I only actually landed 5-6 of them and none were over 6 inches so of course they were all quickly unhooked in the water and released. I was only there for about 3 hours so the action was appreciated, I'm hoping to get back and try the whole again without the swimmer in there.
Regardless, a day on the river is never a disappointment. Thank you to everyone for their posts on here, it's really helpful to read about the area and find some good ideas for fishing spots.

the campgrounds you speak of are very real, but up the hill a ways from the bridge. there are two or three seperate communes btw... they are permanent residence campgound kinda places. very very wierd, large scale sadness. a lot of break ins around that area.

on the brighter side of the gorge though, is the lost city franklin. Franklin is a long walk from the bridge, a deserted minng town complete with deserted cemetery, and open vertical mine shaft that seems to have no bottom. One of the coolest discoveries ive made recently.
