Hit the S. Sky with a fly rod today and had some good success.
The Sky seems to be either infested with little trout or sparsely populated by larger ones. An earlier trip yielded 30-40 small redbands to 10" on Dry/dropper rigs, and this trip yielded a couple of small fish on the nymph, several missed dry hits from decent fish, and two very nice fish (16" and 15") on Rabbit Streamers.
I've been having a lot of fun lately on these outings, away from the crowds and the grueling efforts of steelheading in solitude. The fish aren't terribly large, but are beautiful and always put a bend in the rod. The occasional nice fish makes it even better. A more experienced fly angler could do very well up here. I am still going through my paces learning the sport, with more river knowledge than fly-fishing knowledge.
Sidenote: Trout ER save! One of the large trout I caught was hooked in the tongue and bleeding, and even with the barbless hook it wasn't looking good. Right after unhooking, I quickly put my thumb on the wound in the tongue and applied firm pressure. The fish was still able to breathe in the net, and the blood loss stopped soon and clotted within two minutes or so. I then let the fish swim freely in the net for a good couple of minutes to ensure that it was doing okay, and it swam off strongly, saved by some quick thinking. He should do just fine!
Check the river out!
