After a fruitless couple of weeks finally some success. I got to the river around 8 or so and started with some eggs. I had a number of nibbles and lost a lot of eggs with no strikes. I tried drifting a number of colors for a while and then started to cast a pink buzz bomb of all things.
First cast a pretty good nudge, second cast the same and then fish on! After a couple of pretty good runs and jumps it headed towards a log I tired to keep it away from, but no luck. I thought the fish had snagged my line on it, as I could see my lure and was making no progress. I took a little pressure off the line and there it was still on the line. It took another run and I finally got it near shore. I pulled it onto the bank and as I reached for it, the leader snapped and it wiggled back into the water taking my buzzbomb with it!
Disappointed I put another Buzzbomb on and bang! First cast, fish on! I could see my lure in the water and a ripple zing over to take it. This one was even more lively and took three or four runs and had quite the aerial show before coming close to shore, then it took even a few more runs before I could get it back. Having just learned my lesson I was patient and methodically worked the fish to the bank and quickly placed it far from the "wiggle back to the water" zone. Happily I dispatched it and removed the hook. Much to my surprise, when I stood up and looked back at the river, I saw my lost Buzzbomb from the first fish. I had to wait for the tide to go out a little farther before I could retrieve it.
I cast the Buzzbomb another 1/2 hour or so with no other strikes before leaving.
Today was probably a 2, but I gave it a 3 for being my first coho in probably 40 years, as I just got back into salmon fishing last year, and got a number of pinks but no cohos. So if you saw me I was the 57 year old guy acting just a little too excited about losing one coho and catching the another today. I probably need to invest in a good net.
