Got to blue creek area trout hatchery around 7. Fished a couple spots between the trout hatchery and blue creek with not a bite.
Tried spinners, drifting corkies. One guy on a boat caught a steelhead and we overheard him saying he caught a big fish yesterday about 25lbs. He also said the river has been getting better for steelhead day by day the last week. Wasn't for me tho.
Headed down to barrier dam around 10. Water was SUPER high (as it was near blue creek), tried drifting large corkies, also tried floating a jig. No one in this area seemed to have a single hit. Although when I went up to the fishing boundary marker right below the dam I did see a couple risers but that's it..

Getting very discouraged as I've gone steelheading/salmon fishing about 10 times now and I got skunked every time ??.
Hopefully when the run picks up and the springers come I'll have better luck!

Your just beginning.. When steelhead fishing its the fish of 1000's of casts.... Plus ya gotta be on the fish in order to catch em... Im pretty pissed at the state for not opening up the nooksack river this year, the escapement reports show they havent reported a single fish at the hatchery but after talking to the ops mgr they have close to 8o....... Well now isnt that funny.... No reports to WDFW but they have 80... SCUM OF THE EARTH IS WHAT THEY ARE.....

You're about a week earky for the run to pick up. If you hear frogs start croaking at night the fishing is good then.

DJ would you rather have seen those harvested this year instead of actually having something to sponsor the future? Scum of the earth is a little harsh and extreme wouldn't you say??

You need to put a dropper bead on the jig about 18 inches or so and make sure the bead is about 2 inches from the hook. Peg it with some tooth picks to hold it in place, I had a straight jig setup last year till a buddy who is a pro told me about the bead and first time out with it had to fish by 9am.
