So, why can't we report from Alaska? We can from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California... Not Alaska. This is a report for multiple areas in Alaska both salt and fresh water. Hence the "secret lake" selection. Okay, on with the report!
Wife, mother, and I arrived in anchorage on Monday evening. Drove down to Soldotna to Grandmas. Wife and Mom took a charter the next day out of Homer for halibut, rockfish, and lingcod. I stayed back to fish the Kenai River for Sockeye. Lost my first fish after a few hours and took a break. Went back a few hours later and finally landed my first ever Alaskan Salmon and first ever Sockeye!
Went back the next day to the Kenai, lost a fish and caught another sockeye. Grandma also got her first sockeye but we had to release it as it was foul hooked. Minutes later she got another and it was hooked in the mouth! KEEPER! I was a proud Grandson to be there for her first salmon and to be there to net it for her.
Fished the Kasilof one day for Kings and scrached out one 37lb chinook.
Mom and Wife did great on the overnight charter, limiting on halibut. Also, they brought home a ton of rockfish and a huge lingcod.
We all tried the river some more for reds but we kept losing fish. Lost more than I can count.
It was an amazing experience and we cannot wait to go again.
