I have to say that this was the most fun I have had fishing in a long time. Went out with my father-in-law and my wife's uncle after some sturgeon. After a two hour drive we reached the launch at deep river at 6am. We were in the water by 6:30am and headed out. We anchored about 5 miles east of the Astoria bridge and got our lines in the water. My father-in-law started with some sand shrimp and the rest of us used anchovies. Almost immediately the sand shrimp produced two shakers back to back within about 15 minutes. After that it slowed down, only got a couple bites here and there. Around 11am my wife's uncle hooked up with a 46 inch hog (he's on the right in the pic). Around noon the tide was heading out and the wind and rain started up so we decided to retreat and find an inlet to get out of the weather till the tide turned. We found a spot in about 12 feet of water not expecting anything. Within minutes of hitting the water I started getting some nibbles. When he started to pull a little harder I set the hook, FISH ON! At first I didn't know what it was, but when he realized that I was pulling him in he took off. It took about 10 minutes to get him near the boat and as soon as he saw it he shot out of the water like a missile, almost landing in the boat. After a couple more runs we got him netted and in the boat. What a pig, measured 49 inches about 35 pounds. Just a note, we were in this little bay alone and as soon as we were done landing this fish we had about 12 boats around us, one was about 50 feet away, kind of annoying. The rest of the day produced nothing. The tide was running really fast and it was hard to tell if you were getting a bite or just rolling with the water. We headed in around 5 pm. This is my first sturgeon but definitely not the last. Not only are they fun to fight, they are good eating too! Tight lines.
