The 4th of July weekend provided constant fish. Camped 2 miles from the Lincoln boat ramp on the Reservation side. From the beach, we all caught nearly 20 smallmouth bass a day until they raised the river 2 feet and wiped out half our campsite. Those are charming folks at the dam. Just about anything you could throw out there, the bass ate it up.
Right at dark we were still catching bass. Saw small schools of fish in the cove earlier so decided to drag a crawler through there hoping the walleyes would come in there to feed. All Sandy bottom, but hey weird things happen. Got my jig head and worm right up to the beach and something smacked it and I knew it was a big fish because of the swirl it made but all he got was my worm tail. Put on another half a crawler and did the same thing and landed a 25" Rainbow. He sat right at the top of the drop off and nailed it 6 inches from the beach. I had my ultra light so it was fun. Thank you FIRELINE. Didn’t have a scale so don't know what he weighed. The perfect thing to say now is that he was release unharmed and will be caught another day. Sorry. I sat right there on the beach and filleted him on a nice flat rock. It fed a lot of people and was so good right out of the water.
Fished hawk creek Fri, Sat, Sun, and Mon. Limited out on Sunday, caught 2 or 3 each of the other days. Biggest one was 14". I caught them all jigging with lead heads and night crawlers. Red Jig head seemed to work best but it was slow. The few that I caught were at 28 feet in 31 feet of water. Didn't work too hard for them, just tried to stay in the shade and beat the sun. I did see a couple catch a nice 3lb walleye with a half a worm & a MARSHMELLOW (???) just to the right of the Lincoln boat ramp. .
This trip rates a 5 for the fact that we constantly caught fish. When you have a bunch of kids and you can just catch 7-11 inch smallmouth all day, then everything is good. We did release the smallmouth and one other 13 inch rainbow. But the walleyes and the big BOW....YUMMY
