Fished the lower end of Roosevelt Lake near Grand
Coulee.
Put in at Springs Canyon. Cold, but the ramp is sanded so ice wasn't much of
a problem. I little snowy and slippery getting down the canyon to the ramp,
though. Got snowed on pretty good. Wind was reasonable. My son and I landed
18 rainbows, and lost probably twice that many. We caught and released a
small number of kokes. We ran worm harness rigs with large green spinners
(like a walleye rig), with large nightcrawlers double-hooked, and trolled
dead slow. We used 6# test, I prefer the green because it generally matches
the hue of Roosevelt (Berkely Trilene). We put the rigs well behind the
boat--a couple hundred feet--because the 'bows are right on top, and spooky.
We saw only three other boats the whole time. The scenery is spectacular and
the fishing was worth the 15 degree early morning temp. I would recommend it
if you are comfortable pulling your boat over the Pass (we cover ours, but
it
still gets filthy) in snow, and you dress for the weather. There is ice in
places along the road running beside Banks Lake, so you have to be really
careful. The parking lots are slippery, and it's a pain with a boat behind
you. However, if you are seeking solitude, air that hasn't been breathed by
anyone else, and pretty steady fish action, winter time at Roosevelt is hard
to beat.
