First of all for this trip we planned on launching at Hawk Creek Campground, but we arrived and the launch was closed because the water level was too low. So we turned around and went to Porcupine Bay hoping the launch was open after the landslide across the lake. We were in luck. Porcupine Bay is open for launching, but the water level is down and the launch area only has one dock.
Never the less, we launched around 7 a.m. and headed across from the launch. We started trolling upstream from just around the corner of the landslide. I was using a brown walleye rig with a bottom bouncer and my dad was using a green/yellow/red tiger striped walleye trolling rig but was not using a bottom bouncer. We were trolling in about 20 feet of water. We continued upstream on the north side of the river in about twenty feet of water until the river narrows (about 45 mins to 1 hour). At this depth, we were pulling in an occasional 10-12 inch walleye and alot of 6-8 inch smallmouth bass.
After that we decided to troll upstream in about 15 feet of water on the south side of the lake through the narrow part to the sand bar past the 3rd pump house. We were able to land two or three 10-12 inch smallmouth bass but the majority of the fish caught were the 6-8 inch smallmouth bass.
Next, decided to troll back downstream towards the launch on the north side of the lake from the sand bar. As we entered the narrow part of the lake, we started getting more 10-12 inch smallmouth bass and of course some of the 6-8 inch smallmouth as well. As we continued downstream, we were able to land a 15 inch rainbow trout using a bottom bouncer and red wedding ring in about 30 feet of water and a 15 inch walleye with the same set-up. We decided to stay in the deeper water (35-45 feet) in order to avoid the 6-8 inch smallmouth bass. This tactic worked, but we also avoided everything else. Once we got back to the where we started we pulled up and went back to the launch.
