Steelhead fishing on the Upper Columbia continues to perk along. In this late season, cold water time of the year you have got to be quick on the hook set. Basic rigging consists of medium sized spinning reels with 15# test super braid. Set a slip bobber knot, then the bobber. Then add an egg weight, that in combination with your baited jig will make it very easy for a fish to pull the bobber under. Then tie a swivel on. To the other end of a swivel tie 3 feet of 12# test flurocarbon line. Tie your quarter ounce Rock Dancer jig to the other end. (Red and Black along with Purple and Black are good colors to start with.) Thread a scented purple shrimp onto the jig hook. Approach your targeted "hole" with great stealth. Cast gently above where you expect to get bit. Move frequently. Pounding away at a likely looking piece of water is less successful than running and gunning. The guys extracted those fish all over the place from Bridgeport down to Well's Dam. Saturday produced 21 takedowns in under 5 hours. Only five of those takedowns resulted in fish to the boat. As you would expect, the brighter fish had the firmer / redder meat. The darker fish had whiter / mushier meat.
